Total joint replacement is a surgical procedure in which a damaged, dysfunctional, or arthritic joint or joint surface is replaced with a plastic, metal, or ceramic prosthesis. The orthopedic prosthesis is designed to move just as a normal, healthy joint would. Arthroplasty, also called joint replacement, is surgery to replace a damaged joint with an artificial joint. Providers usually replace the entire joint. Less often, they replace only the damaged part of the joint. Joint replacement is major surgery. It is important that you are aware of potential risks and complications. These include problems from anesthesia, infection, bleeding from your incision, blood clots, damage to nerves or blood vessels, dislocation with a hip replacement, and very rarely, death.
